Environmental Health

NCHP has extensive experience in providing education regarding the health impact of pesticide exposure, lead poisoning, and unsafe drinking water.

Highlights of NCHP's Environmental Health Programs

Educating residents living in colonias (HUD-designated rural towns along the border) in the Arizona counties of Cochise and Santa Cruz about lead poisoning and related health risks. These efforts were made possible through funding from Housing and Urban Development.

Supporting promotoras (community health educators) in disseminating information and tools to (1) purify drinking water in the colonias; (2) increase community awareness of environmental health concerns; (3) build the local capacity of colonias to improve the quality of life of residents; and (4) promote bi-national coordination to address environmental health issues. These efforts targeted predominantly Hispanic/Latino low-income residents of colonias in Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, and were supported with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Initiating the Lead Poisoning Prevention Program through funding from the Arizona Department of Health Services. Recruitment, outreach and lead poisoning prevention education were implemented with low-income families in Cochise, Santa Cruz, and Yuma Counties. Lead poisoning prevention messages were disseminated throughout many Arizona communities and regular follow-ups were conducted.

Providing education about pesticide exposure to extremely high-risk migrant workers in Yuma County, Arizona through funding provided by the Centers for Disease Control.
