Suicide Prevention &
Special Populations: Age Groups

Friday, January 23rd @ 9am

Join us as we discuss different age groups across the lifespan and the common mental health issues they experience. We discuss targeted suicide prevention approaches specific to each age group as well as age groups as they relate to military service and veteran status. We explore the common age group for veterans and the ways in which targeted suicide prevention may differ for this group specifically. We will also discuss what to do if you encounter an individual who is suicidal regardless of their age.

Special Populations: Cultures

Thursday, February 5th @ 11am

Join us as we discuss culture as it relates to suicide prevention. Culture is defined and explored while also identifying the limiting view generalizations can have on specific populations. This video discusses four cultures and how specific tactics might be used to target individuals in each cultural category for the sake of preventing suicides. Suicide prevention among military culture is also discussed with a focus on suicide risk factors, warning signs as well as resources.

Women Veterans & Suicide Risk

Tuesday, February 17th @ 10am

Join us as we discuss the lifespan of the average woman Veteran and the unique struggles she faces when compared to her male counterpart. We discuss statistics and data that indicate the discrepancy between the two genders and how females are at a higher risk for a variety of things such as mental health issues, substance abuse/misuse, Military Sexual Trauma, and suicidal ideation. We also discuss methods and tactics specifically targeting women Veterans to address this issue.

Social Media &
Suicide Prevention

Wednesday, March 4th @ 10am

Join us as we discuss social media and the part it plays in mental health. Topics include social media use across the lifespan, ways in which social media is used as well as the spread of information, both accurate and inaccurate, across social media. We specifically discuss how social media can play a negative role in mental health and the connections it has to risk factors relating to suicidal ideation. We also explore the ways in which social media use can decrease the risk of suicide by increasing protective factors. We discuss veteran suicide specifically and how social media plays a role in helping or harming suicide rates. Resources for individuals in crisis are also provided.

Suicide Prevention &
Practice Scenarios

Friday, March 13th @ 9am

Join us as we apply the VA tool Operation S.A.V.E. to address and support individuals going through a mental health crisis. We discuss suicide statistics, risk factors and warning signs, as well as ways to provide comfort and validation while also encouraging and expediting getting help. Five different practice scenarios are presented with opportunities to think through responses and ways to provide support and help for the fictional character. This training is ideal for behavioral, social or mental health providers looking for additional practice or for any person looking for practice opportunities to be prepared for a suicidal crisis.
