Housing for Heroes Expansion: Frequently Asked Questions

Bringing Veteran Services Closer to Home in Pima County
Housing for Heroes (HFH) is expanding its Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) services to Pima County, Arizona! Through this new mobile program, our team will work to make essential housing support and resources more accessible to veterans and their families, including those living in rural communities.
Have questions about what this expansion means for you or a veteran you know? We've answered some common questions below.
1. What makes the Housing for Heroes expansion different from our other SSVF programs?
Unlike our traditional SSVF programs, which primarily serve veterans and their families from designated office locations, the Pima County Housing for Heroes team will offer both office-based and mobile services.
Our case managers will bring services directly into the community using mobile units, helping veterans in rural areas of Pima County connect with resources and support without having to travel to a central office for every interaction.
Our goal is to reduce barriers to accessing services and make it easier for veterans and their families to get the support they need.
2. Will the mobile program still offer traditional SSVF services?
Absolutely! Going mobile doesn't mean changing the core services we provide. Eligible veterans and their families can continue to receive case management, rental assistance, and housing support through the program.
The mobile approach simply gives our team another way to connect with veterans, address their needs, and help them work toward housing stability.
3. What additional resources will the Pima County Housing for Heroes program offer?
In addition to traditional SSVF services, our mobile units will help bridge the digital divide by providing access to technology and internet connectivity.
Veterans may be able to use the mobile office's Wi-Fi and technology equipment to connect with telehealth appointments, access online VA services, and navigate other digital resources.
By bringing these tools into the community, we hope to make it easier for veterans to connect with important services, even when reliable internet access or technology may otherwise be a challenge.
4. Will transportation be available?
Yes! Transportation may be available to eligible program participants who need assistance getting to qualifying appointments or events.
If transportation is a barrier for you, let your Housing for Heroes case manager know. Our team can discuss your needs and determine what options may be available.
5. How often will the mobile team travel outside of Tucson?
As the program gets established, our team will assess community needs and determine a consistent schedule for visiting rural areas throughout Pima County.
We're committed to finding ways to reach veterans where they are, and we'll share more information about mobile service locations and schedules as those plans develop.
Stay tuned for updates as we continue expanding our reach!
6. Who is eligible for Housing for Heroes SSVF services?
Veterans and veteran families who are experiencing financial hardship and struggling to maintain stable housing may qualify for Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) assistance. This includes veterans who are currently experiencing homelessness, those at risk of losing their housing, and those who need support to maintain housing stability.
Every situation is unique, and our team can help determine whether you may qualify for services. If you or your family are facing housing challenges, we encourage you to reach out and learn more about the resources available to you.
7. What communities in Pima County will the mobile team serve?
As our mobile program gets underway, we're still identifying the communities and locations where our services are needed most.
Is there a community in Pima County where access to veteran services is limited? We'd love to hear from you! Contact our team and let us know where mobile services could make a difference. Your feedback will help us better understand community needs as we develop our service schedule.
8. Do I need an appointment to meet with the mobile team?
No! Both appointments and walk-ins will be welcome at our mobile service locations.
However, please keep in mind that appointments will receive priority, so walk-in visitors may experience longer wait times. Our schedule may also be adjusted based on community needs and service demand.
If you have questions about upcoming mobile visits or want to make an appointment, contact our team for more information.
9. What types of housing assistance are available?
The services available depend on each veteran's individual circumstances and the needs of their family. Our case managers work alongside veterans to develop personalized housing plans that address their priorities and help them work toward housing stability.
Depending on eligibility and individual needs, assistance may include case management, rental assistance, housing support, and connections to additional community resources.

When appropriate, our team members can also provide assistance with technology-related challenges, helping veterans navigate online services and connect with the resources they need.
Our goal is to make accessing essential services easier, even for veterans who may not have reliable internet access or their own technology.
11. Is there a cost to participate in the program?
No. There is no cost to participate in the Housing for Heroes SSVF program.
